Citizenship & Constitution Day 2022: Danny Fenster
Date and time
September 15, 2022 at 6 p.m.
About this event
On May 24, 2021, while attempting to fly home to Detroit, writer and journalist Danny Fenster, then working in Yangon as managing editor of the anglophone magazine Frontier Myanmar, was arrested by agents of the Burmese junta that had seized power the previous February. He spent the next six months in prison, in the company of Burmese dissidents.
Released last November, Fenster is now a Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University. This September 15, he returns to Wayne State University, where he earned a master’s in English in 2016. In conversation with Creative Writing Professor, Donovan Hohn, Fenster will discuss his experiences in Myanmar, the growing global threat of authoritarian surveillance, and the imperiled role of the writer as a truth-telling witness.
